If you’re playing Detention for the first time, I recommend you stop reading here. The well-known computer game Detention actually has two endings. If you, like me, have tried twice and still gotten the bad ending, why not peek at this secret and learn how to reach the other ending? In Chapter 4, Fang Ruixin talks with her double, and the double gives you options to answer. No matter which one you choose, the game keeps going. The only difference is how it ends.
The so-called good ending is when Wei Zhongting appears and the player takes control of him, while the bad ending is when Fang Ruixin ends by hanging herself. Interestingly, we all know Fang Ruixin actually jumped off the roof to her death (there’s a shadow of Fang Ruixin jumping down while you’re on the roof), so why does the ending show her hanging? In fact, Detention doesn’t really have good and bad endings. There is only one ending, and it’s the good one! That doesn’t mean the bad ending is also a Happy Ending. We should put ourselves in Fang Ruixin’s place. If the answers you give are wrong, it means Fang Ruixin still can’t face her own guilt, and she enters the next cycle of reincarnation. If you are Fang Ruixin, the next cycle means the game starts over. So the bad ending isn’t really an ending. Only by answering correctly can Fang Ruixin break out of this endless cycle of suffering, and that is the real ending. For convenience, though, I’ll still call them the good ending and the bad ending!
So how do you answer Fang Ruixin’s shadow in Chapter 4 to reach the good ending? There are four questions in total. You must answer all of them completely correctly, as described below, to reach the good ending. And after answering the fourth question, pick up the paper airplane on the floor when you leave the rooftop and go down the stairs. Any mistake or omission leads to the bad ending.
In one sentence: “Put yourself in Fang Ruixin’s shoes and face yourself,” and you’ll get the good ending.
Question 1 is in the small room next to the auditorium. The shadow asks you, “What do you fear most?” Choose “Losing myself.”
Question 2: “When something goes wrong at home, what will you choose?” Remember, you need to face yourself, not give the textbook answer of a good, obedient student. So choose “Escape and hide.”
Question 3: “Standing beside Teacher Zhang, what are you thinking?” Choose “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
The last one!! Facing the reality of losing your support, what will you choose? Choose “Fight to win it back.” Because the point is to face yourself! Only by facing it can you transcend it.
Don’t rush at the end! When you leave the rooftop, you’ll see a paper airplane in the stairwell. If you forget to pick it up, that’s the bad ending too!
