Supreme Commander is a strategy game designed by Chris Taylor, the producer of Total Annihilation. What makes Supreme Commander special is that its control scheme is quite different from ordinary strategy games (Age of Empires and Age of Empires II). It lets you command your units more conveniently. For example, I used to love playing Age of Empires. Every time I played it, I thought it was fun, but the controls had some shortcomings. When using transport boats to carry troops, for instance, you had to keep moving the transports back and forth. In Supreme Commander, you can use an assist function so that the transport automatically takes the unit to its destination as soon as it is produced. Also, in Age of Empires, patrolling was automatic within the area covered by your buildings. But sometimes your city is scattered, and with the default patrol method it is very dangerous (units get isolated and attacked). In Supreme Commander, you can set the patrol route directly. The whole control scheme satisfied me to the extreme~ Of course, Age of Empires is also fun. I do not know why my CD seems to have gone bad..... And the computer opponents in Age of Empires seemed too weak to me, so I got tired of it.

The reason I say Supreme Commander is a truly strategic game is its satellite view system, which gives you more of a sense of commanding and strategy. After playing Age of Empires for a long time, my definition of the word “strategy” had become somewhat vague. Strategy actually refers to an overall war plan. According to the explanation on Wikipedia, it means coordinating the purpose of warfare, gathering intelligence, winning allies, propaganda at home and abroad, and allocating resources. Age of Empires and Age of Empires II are of course strategy games too, but the impact they have on people is far less dramatic than Supreme Commander~~

Supreme Commander Features

  • Dual-screen support
  • Satellite view system
  • A more modern resource system (units are built with energy and mass instead of minerals)
  • Supports Vista
  • Very large player population
  • Insanely strong AI (scarier than Age of Empires @@)
  • No map editor, and only a few fixed maps (a major flaw!!)

Supreme Commander Screenshots

▲▲ Satellite view, which makes it very easy to control your units

▲▲ Setting a patrol route

▲▲ Using assist so that the extra engineers (that is, the peasants) speed up unit training or production

▲▲ A stunning shield that blocks any attack except nuclear weapons, but it has a durability limit

▲▲ Placing the generators next to the shield generator reduces the resources the shield consumes

▲▲ An experimental weapon: one unit can ruin two countries! (It can ruin your own country’s economy as well as the enemy’s XD)

▲▲ A super cool laser cannon. Battles move very fast (it is almost an instant kill)

▲▲ A close-up of a soldier

I wonder if my taste is just different from everyone else’s…. The strategy games I like are almost all played by very few people. Age of Empires and Supreme Commander, which this article introduces, are both almost unknown. Supreme Commander is still a bit better off, since you can at least find it on gaming forums, but Age of Empires is truly sad== There is no trace of it at all on gaming forums. So~ If anyone else plays these two games, leave a comment and let’s get to know each other: )
